MTE-2541 - DeltaV Virtualization | Mark Nixon, John Caldwell, Joel Ohmart, and Dirk Thiele
Meet the experts behind DeltaV Virtualization research and product development. Discuss options and best practices for deploying your DeltaV Virtualization platform for on-line production systems and off-line training and development systems. Learn the latest developments and future capabilities for the DeltaV Virtualization product roadmap.
Scheduled: Friday at 8AM and 10AM in Captiva 1-2

MTE-2542 - Expanding the Use of DeltaV Advanced Control | Terry Blevins, Willy Wojsznis, Terry Chmelyk, Louis Heavner, Christopher Mcnabb
Meet the Experts Session: DeltaV Predict/Predict Pro may be easily layered on a non-DeltaV DCS. This has been successfully done in numerous installations involving Provox, Foxboro, Honeywell , Bailey, Allen Bradley, and Rockwell. Also, DeltaV PredictPro and the DeltaV PID features allow sampled analyzers and WirelessHART measurements to be used in closed loop control. In this session we will explore and discuss the product features and techniques that enable this expanded capability. In addition, installations examples will be used by the panel to spark questions and audience participation in discussion of best practices of layered advanced control applications and the use of sampled measurements in control.
Scheduled: Friday at 8AM in Daytona 1-2 and 10AM in Miami 1-2

TF-2596 - The Science and Application of Big Data in Process Control | Mark Nixon, Shawn Anderson, Joe Johnson, Brian Parsonnet, and Lara Rubbelke
Over the past 20 years the amount of data being collected has skyrocketed. It is common to hear companies claim to be "drowning in a sea of data, but thirsty for information." A typical manufacturing site could easily generate several Terabytes of data per year. This manufacturing data is diverse including time-series data, event data, quality data, materials data, and device and equipment health data. Utilizing this data has the potential to profoundly affect businesses. To tackle the challenges of Big Data, a new generation of technologies has emerged. Many of these new technologies have been grouped under the term "NoSQL". Utilizing this data is also a big challenge. To address this challenge the fields of Data Science and Machine Learning have emerged. In this forum we will discuss Big Data and Predictive Analytics and describe how they can be used for performing fault detection and predicting future outcomes. A discussion of both on premise and cloud deployments will be included. Methods for ordering and organizing data, methods used to filter and clean that data, and techniques used to learn from that data will be discussed. Predictive Analytics is not about the numbers, it is about making/asking questions, developing explanations, and putting that learning back into the organization to support on-line operations, perform fault detection, and predict future outcomes.
Scheduled in St. George 112: Tuesday at 1PM and Wednesday at 1:15PM

4-1892 - Using Wireless Throttling Valves in Column Control | Terry Blevins, Stephen Briggs, and Kurtis Jensen
Technical Level: Intermediate
The control performance that may be achieved using wireless throttling valves has been evaluated through tests conducted at the UT Pickle Research Center on an 6" distillation column. The test results indicate that the control achieved using a wireless throttling valve is comparable to that achieved using a wired valve for a variety of flow control applications. Information on control implementation and results achieved with the WirelessHART throttling valve are shown where both wired and WirelessHART transmitters were used to access the control measurement.
Scheduled: Wednesday at 11AM in Gainesville 2 and Thursday at 4:15PM in Naples 3

TF-2597 - Wireless for Control | Terry Blevins, Scott Broadley, Mitch Panther, Neil Peterson, Bailee Roach, and Eric Rotvold
With data reliability that exceeds 99.9%, WirelessHART (IEC 62591) may be used to address a wide variety of control applications. A wireless "hybrid" control loop typically consists of a wireless transmitter, PIDPlus and wired valve. This session will discuss how to evaluate the use of wireless control by considering transmitter sample rate and process response time. This session will not only explore wireless control applications of today, but will discuss the future capabilities of the WirelessHART standard that enable a wireless throttling valve to be used in closed loop control applications.
Scheduled in St. George 104: Tuesday at 1PM and Wednesday at 1:15PM

5-2221 - Wireless Model Predictive Control (MPC) for a Divided Wall Column | Terry Blevins, Willy Wojsznis, and Bailee Roach
Technical Level: Intermediate
The divided wall column (DWC) design can provide savings in energy and capital cost compared to a conventional column design. In the installation at the University of Texas, WirelessHART transmitters are applied for many of the process measurements used in control. MPC application is crucial for achieving operational stability and effective operation of the DWC process. In this workshop we present a novel concept of incorporating wireless measurements into DeltaV PredictPro. The workshop details wireless MPC design and discuss the application challenges illustrated by test results.
Scheduled: Wednesday at 9AM in Tampa 2 and Thursday at 8AM in Naples 2 News
Wednesday, October 1, 2014: Wireless Control FoundationWireless Control Foundation - Continuous and Discrete Control for the Process Industry, the third book in the "Foundation" series, is now available for purchase on the ISA website at http://www.isa.org/wirelesscontrol.

This new book details how PIDPlus can be used to address wireless control and provides information on recent technical innovations that enable wireless measurements and wireless valves to be used in closed loop control. It is written for the process or control engineer who is familiar with traditional control but has little or no experience using a wireless transmitter or wireless valve.

You can learn more by reading the Terry Blevin's article, Technology Update: New day for wireless control, in the September issue of Control Engineering magazine or by visiting the WirelessControlFoundation.com website.

MythBusters: What’s Real and What’s Not When it Comes to More is Better for Operators to be Effective
There is considerable folklore in the process industry. In this year’s round of “meet the experts” our experts will discuss several of these scenarios and will use evidence to confirm or bust these myths. Things such as more colorful graphics make operators more effective. More parameters on graphics make operators more aware. More alarms on displays make operators more informed about what happened. More detailed displays are necessary to make operators run plants more effectively. More pixels/screens are needed for situation awareness. More screens and bigger screens help operators see more clearly. More displays that look like P&IDs make operators more comfortable. This panel of experts with years in research and experience will either bust or confirm these myths with questions and answers from the audience.

10AM in Austin 2 - Terry Blevins and Willy Wojsznis
Utilizing DeltaV Advanced Control Innovations to Improve Control Performance
Many functions of the DeltaV control system are unique in the process industry. In this presentation we explore and discuss innovative features of the DeltaV PID and embedded Advanced Control products that can be applied to improve control performance. In particular, PID options are addressed that enhance cascade and override applications and allow effective single loop control using a sampled or wireless measurement. Application examples are used to illustrate how MPC can be easily added and commissioned on-line with no changes in the existing control strategy. Also, field trial results and experience from development of batch and continuous data analytics will be used to discuss new products and future tools that enable improvements to be made in plant operations. Challenges and Solutions in Data Analytics Application for a Distillation Column
In this workshop we present the results achieved from a field trial of continuous data analytics on a distillation column at Huntsman – Freeport, TX. The desired outcome of this project was to provide reliable inferential sensors for Tepa and Heavies product quality parameters. As part of the model development data from both normal operations and from a specially designed column test were used. In the process modeling several practical techniques for outliers detection, data synchronization and data cleaning were explored. The on-line operation results are presented and discussed.

Control Using Wireless Measurements
The DeltaV PIDPlus is based on a modification of the PID reset and rate calculation to account for non-periodic measurement updates. An alternate approach is to use PID with a modified Kalman filter or modified Smith Predictor. Test results are presented that compare the PIDPlus to these alternate approaches.
